Striking in the early hours of Saturday morning as a Category 5 storm, Cyclone Pam has left tens of thousands of people displaced, dozens dead and many missing.
Reports from Port Vila reveal that entire villages have been completely flattened by Cyclone Pam’s fury. With much of the country cut off from communication, the extent of the damage to remote island communities remains unknown but Cyclone Pam’s destruction is likely to have hit them hard.
Vanuatu is home to a number of our inclusive financial institution clients, who work closely with the nation’s most disadvantaged – those who are most in need of support at a time like this. When tragedy strikes, they do not have the resources to fend off the hunger, disease and homelessness that these events can cause.
Approximately 132,000 people in Vanuatu are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Fern has already donated to the Red Cross appeal, and will be working closely with our clients to identify individual situations or communities where we can offer further support. Join us and make a donation in order to help those affected – your donation will provide much-needed hygiene kits with soap, toothpaste and other essentials as well as tarpaulins for emergency shelter and kitchen supplies.
