Matthew Wallace, executive director and co-founder of Opportunities Now Myanmar, believes that financial inclusion must include a base level of financial literacy education to be successful. With the rising use of telecom among the Burmese, and the lack of opportunities both at home and abroad, young Burmese are seeking opportunities through micro-entrepreneurship.
Opportunities Now Myanmar has developed a chatbot called Mr. Finance, run through Facebook Messenger, that delivers brief bites of financial literacy information designed for both personal and business use. He’s a casual, storytelling chatbot that is accessible and friendly. People can log on during a work break, or while travelling, to get quick lessons in financial management.
The program is designed for the culture-specific way the Burmese are using their mobile phones and the internet. The first iteration of Mr. Finance was in Burmese, and plans are developing to allow lessons in languages of the ethnic minorities.
Opportunities Now Myanmar develops and delivers business training and mentorship to young people who are interested in developing small and microbusinesses. With additional support through mentorship and assistance with funding opportunities, Opportunities Now Myanmar is making a difference in this small nation.
